There are a number of production wireless cellular networks using Open RAN across the world today. Some examples include:

  • Jio Platforms in India is building its own 5G network based on Open RAN technology. Jio has already tested in-house-built 5G radios integrated with 5G core and plans to leverage the companies that have India-based manufacturing.

  • Rakuten Mobile in Japan has launched a commercial 4G LTE network using Open RAN technology. Rakuten Mobile is also planning to launch a 5G network using Open RAN.

  • Dish Network in the United States is building a nationwide 5G network using Open RAN technology. Dish Network has already launched a limited commercial 5G network in some parts of the US.

  • Vodafone is using Open RAN technology to deploy 4G LTE and 5G networks in a number of countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, and Spain.

  • Deutsche Telekom is using Open RAN technology to deploy 4G LTE and 5G networks in Germany.

These are just a few examples of the production wireless cellular networks using Open RAN across the world today. As Open RAN technology continues to mature and become more widely adopted, we can expect to see even more deployments in the coming years. In addition to the above, there are a number of other operators and service providers around the world that are trialing or planning to deploy Open RAN networks. For example, Telefónica, Orange, and NTT Docomo are all trialing Open RAN technology. The growing number of production and trial deployments of Open RAN networks is a clear indication that Open RAN is a viable and attractive option for mobile network operators. Open RAN offers a number of benefits, including increased flexibility and agility, reduced costs, and improved security.
