Engle (2017) from Cornell University Library define annotated bibliography as

“An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.”

Similarly, Purdue Online Writing Lab (2017) describe annotated bibliography of citation consisting of summary followed by evaluation to assess and reflect on the research content. There were multiple assignments, which require writing annotated bibliographies during the course. Requirements for annotated bibliography laid down by course facilitator include, abstract of author, summary by student followed by strength and weakness of article. The whole activity require searching through numerous scholarly articles and select good articles for final annotation. After reading through all the articles, summary of article is provided in one’s own words followed by the strength and weakness identified for each of the article. The exercise of annotated bibliography help in sifting through ocean of academic publications and select the good ones for annotation, which are relevant to the research interest and research subject of student. This activity will help in building the references and citations require for the final dissertation of student. Also, these selected references will be transformed into chapter of literature review, which is an important part of dissertation. After researching high number of articles, student will be able to find the gap in knowledge base which opens up an opportunity to build a research hypothesis for further research towards doctoral dissertation.
